- Candidates were initially tested by the Selection Board and Central Interview Board.
- Later, a Defence Consultative Committee of the Indian Government found that the Selection Board (SB) was best-equipped to handle the process. The GHQ SB replaced the Central Interview Board as a result.
- Thereafter, five Army SBs, one Naval SB, one Air Force SB, and an independent Board for women candidates were set up. In 1945, they screened ICEOs for short service and permanent commission and JSW and IMA candidates.

SSB Selection Process
The SSB evaluation aims at evaluating the psychology, personality, and aptitude of candidates for becoming officers. There is a selection/interview procedure that covers five days, with 13 seats to be filled up in total. Candidates completing each stage with the required marks are selected.
Day-Wise Breakdown
Day 0:
It is the day of reporting for the candidate. He/she has to then present all documents upon arrival and these are verified. An officer will brief candidates about the tasks and schedules over the five days and they will receive their Chest Numbers for further identification.
Day 1 (Stage I- Screening Process):
The actual selection process begins, with candidates taking the OIR test in the morning (MCQ-based reasoning test with 50 questions from non-verbal and verbal reasoning). They have 40-45 minutes to complete the same, getting ranks based on their performance (OIR 1-5). In the afternoon, the PPDT (Picture Perception and Discussion) test begins, with a white and black picture being shown to candidates for around 30 seconds.
Candidates have to analyze the picture and write a story on the same within a few minutes. After this, they are bifurcated into groups, with each being assigned to an officer. Every candidate has to then narrate the story in a minute, followed by a group discussion to create a common story and narrate the same to the invigilator. The results are declared after both these tests and those who did not pass are sent back home.
Day 2 (Stage II- Psychology Test):
Candidates have to take a test comprising four sub-examinations, which are the following:
- TAT (Thematic Apperception Test) - Candidates see a clear picture for 30 seconds and then have to write a story in four minutes. 11 pictures are shown and one is kept blank. For the last story, the candidate has to create a unique story.
- WAT (Word Association Test) - 60 daily-use words are shown to aspirants (each for 15 seconds) and they have to write a sentence based on the same.
- SRT (Situation Reaction Test) - Candidates get booklets with 60 questions and have to respond to the same in 30 minutes.
- SDT (Self-Description Test) - Candidates have to write self-descriptions of themselves (there are five questions in total) in this test.
Days 3 and 4 (Stage II- Group Tasks):
The GTO office assigns diverse tasks to aspirants, including both solo and group activities that have to be executed within a specific timeline. These include both physical and mental tasks, while an interview is held afterwards based on the PIQ form submitted on day I and also general knowledge.
Day 5 (Stage II- Conference):
An officers’ panel holds an official conference with every candidate, conversing with him/her and checking habits, life skills, expressions, honesty, and overall confidence. Aspirants then receive marks for their performance and are either recommended/not recommended. The results are then announced and successful candidates are allotted to their respective training facilities.
