What is JoSAA
JoSAA was established by the Ministry of Education, India, to regulate and manage joint seat allocation to the participating institutes. This covers a whopping 118 institutions (for 2023-24), including 23 IITs and 31 NITs, along with IIEST Shibpur, 26 IIITs, and 38 other technical institutes which are partially or fully funded by the State or Central Governments.
Admissions to all the programs offered at these institutions will be done through JoSAA. The qualifying examinations for JoSAA registration include JEE (Advanced), JEE (Main) B.E./B.Tech, B.Arch, and B.Planning. Admissions are done through the JoSAA official website, which is https://josaa.nic.in.
JoSAA Counseling Dates 2024
At the moment, the JoSAA registration and JoSAA counseling dates for 2024 are yet to be officially released. In 2023, registration started on the 19th of June, while the first round of seat allocation began on the 30th of June. The final round of seat allocation took place on the 26th of July. Hence, the JoSAA 2024 registration and counseling dates can be expected in a similar period.
JoSAA Counseling Process
The JoSAA counseling process involves the following steps:
- JoSAA registration has to be done with academic choices filled in on the official website using credentials like the JEE Main/Advanced password and application number. Filling in choices is free of cost. Candidates may be eligible for seat allocation depending on one, two, three, or all four examinations.
- You must fill in your choices within a 10-day window (that is not extended). You must choose programs prioritized in order of preference of course/institute.
- You should lock your preferences on or before the last date of choice filling. If not, the last-saved choices will be automatically locked. Editing these choices is only possible before the deadline. This will require submitting requests at the registered portal and following instructions afterward.
- You must continuously check the portal for seat allocation in any round.
- Upon allocation, you should complete the Online Reporting steps to accept the seat before the last date for any given round.
- Post this, you can download your initial seat allotment slip and other details.
- You can choose Freeze, Slide, or Float for your chosen programs for further rounds.
- You must upload all the documents and pay the seat acceptance fees.
- Respond to the queries of officers during verification at times.
- The seat may be confirmed/canceled after document verification.
- After successful verification, you can download the Provisional seat allotment letters from the official portal.
- The final acceptance now depends on the successful verification of certificates and the payment of balance institute fees upon joining.

What to do After JoSAA Seat Allotment
After JoSAA registration and counseling, seats are allotted to the candidates. They can get the seats in any round. They must then swiftly confirm their acceptance by paying the requisite fees and completing other formalities. They must also upload all necessary documents on JoSAA’s official website.
What to do if One is Not Satisfied With Allotted Seats
Candidates can freeze, float, or slide their academic programs for subsequent rounds while accepting seats online.
- If they get seats per their first choices, only the freeze option is available, and the other options become unavailable. The candidate may then freeze and accept the seat offered or reject it.
- The float option indicates that the candidate, even though accepting the seat offered, can take admission to an academic program of higher preference in any institute if offered in subsequent allocation rounds. Else, they will continue with the presently chosen program.
- Slide means that the candidate takes the seat offered and states that if admission to a program of higher preference is ensured within the same institute in subsequent allocation rounds, they will take the same. As mentioned earlier, the slide and float options are only available for those not admitted to their first preferences in the initial list.
