Admission Requirements in US vs Germany

Universities in Germany and the USA have a competitive selection process. In both countries, some requirements for admissions are similar. For instance, Indian students must submit their TOEFL/IELTS scores at most universities in the USA and Germany. Moreover, a valid passport, statement of purpose, recommendation letters, and transcripts are necessary during the application process. 

However, there are major differences as well in requirements. These are given below: 

For Germany:

  • You might need to take a study or preparatory course of 1 year, called “Studienkolleg,” to be eligible for undergraduate studies in Germany. However, suppose you have cleared the prelims and advanced parts of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) conducted by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). In that case, you can gain direct subject-restricted admission into German universities. But this is only possible for admission to subjects like natural sciences and technology. 
  • You must apply for an APS certificate. This is an authentication of your Indian academic qualifications and is compulsory for visa applications. 
  • German language proficiency is mandatory for German-taught programs. You must provide Goethe Certifikat, TestDAF, or DSH scores to prove German proficiency.

For the USA:

  • Universities usually ask for SAT or ACT scores for admission to undergraduate programs. 
  • College application essays to explain your motivation behind pursuing a particular course are also required. 
  • Copy of valid passport.

Student Visa Process to Study: USA vs Germany

Student Visa Process for USA:

  • You need an F-1 student visa or M-student visa to pursue higher education in the USA. Depending on your course preference, the visa category can change.
  • The first step is to receive admission into a SEVP-approved school (Student and Exchange Visitor Program). Following this, you must pay the SEVIS I-901 fee of  $350 (29,069) and register with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
  • You will then receive a Form I-20 from your institution. After successful registration with SEVIS and receiving Form I-20, you can apply for a visa by completing the DS-160 visa form, which is available online. 
  • Pay the visa processing application fee and print out the DS-160 barcode page, as required during the interview. Visa fees are around $160 (₹13,271). 
  • You need to arrange the following documents before your visa interview:
    • Passport size photo according to the requirements
    • Copy of a valid passport
    • Academic certificates
    • SEVIS fee receipt
    • Admit letter from a US university
