What is the full form DGP?

The full form of DGP is Director general of police

With a three-star ranking, the Director-General of Police (DGP) is the best police officer in all of the Indian states and union territories. Either DGP or IGP may be held by the Commissioner of Police. It is more likely, though, that he will maintain the DIGP level. There can be more officers in the state with the title of DGP.

The DGP is a three-star general appointed by the government. An individual with the status of Director General of Police, also known as Director General and Inspector General of Police, State Police Chief, or Director General of Police (Head of Police Force), leads each state police force.

The Roles and Responsibilities of a DGP Full Form (Director General of Police)

  • He advises the state government on issues pertaining to the management of the police force.
  • In order to maintain peace and order and the proper performance of the police department's tasks, he is in charge of the discipline and training of the force.
  • According to the Police Act, DIG is able to enact regulations. With the government's previous consent, he can issue orders.
  • In times of riots, strikes, and labor conflicts, he oversees operations. Such operations continue to be managed and directed by a DGP.
  • In the event of significant law and order issues, the president can call for the reserve police troops.
  • He reports his official excursions and visits to the chief minister of state and other relevant officials.
  • The DGP is in charge of managing law enforcement across the whole state.
  • The DGP has the authority to monitor and assess how well their department and disciplinary authority are operating.

The Indian Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that senior police officials might be elevated to the rank of DGP provided they have six months left on their contract before they are scheduled to retire.
