Salem State University offers 33 undergraduate degree programs in fields like humanities, social sciences, and business. There are graduate programs leading to degrees in 24 different subjects, and a continuing education section that provides both credit and non-credit programs. In addition, it is an American state-funded institution located in Salem. It was established in 1854, and is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning on the North Shore, playing a crucial role in the development of Massachusetts' state college system. The essential grounds (North Grounds) are located near the intersection of Lafayette Road and Loring Road, about a mile south of the center of Salem. Salem State College is divided into six distinctive grounds, with a total area of 115 sections of land and about 33 buildings. It is ranked at >600 in the Times Higher Education US College Rankings for 2022. U.S. News ranks it at #96 out of 178 in its list of Regional Universities North for 2023-24.
