Letter Email Telephone Are Example Of Communication Channels

IELTS Essay Sample 1: How have communication channels like letters, email, and telephone improved your life?

My grandfather would often tell us that there was no reliable way to reach someone living away during his youth. Even for short distances, one had to either travel themselves to convey the news/message or rely on a letter, which took time. But like me, I know there are several other people my age who are unable to empathize with his story.

I was born just on the brink of the 21st century when technology was making its presence known to everyone. By the time I was six, telephones were a common sight in my country, and every household had a connection. Owing to the same, I was able to talk to my friends for hours, intertwining my fingers in the wire of my landline as we discussed our favorite games.

Eventually, I got my first mobile phone, a hand-me-down, at the early age of 12. With its host of features, communication was not limited to just calling. In fact, I could spend hours playing games and chatting with friends. In addition, whenever I was sick, my parents could inform the school through a simple text message, saving the hassle of preparing and submitting leave notes.

As I joined college, email was my saving grace, especially during the pandemic. It allowed me to submit assignments, ask for feedback and even communicate my issues with my professors. Moreover, I could also apply for relevant positions at different companies without ever needing to visit them in person.

With hundreds of people relying on these communication channels daily, singling out their usefulness may not be a big deal. Even so, if you take a moment to think about the state of our technological landscape thirty years ago, you will gain a newfound appreciation for the progress we have made.

IELTS Sample Essay 2:  Is our over-reliance on communication channels a good sign?

I can’t help but shudder when I think of a world where information is not at the tip of my fingertips. Fortunately, I don’t have to because our technological prowess can only go one way– ahead. But even so, thinking about the omnipresence of communication channels can often be worrying and pose the question: Are we on the right path?

For me, these mediums have had a consistent presence in my life. From the day I was born, I was a victim of the handheld mobile phone, with relatives clicking my pictures and forwarding them to family groups. My parents did not seem to mind since, of course, who doesn’t like showing off their newborn, right?

But that was just the start. Communication channels, especially mobile phones, have begun to seep into more personal areas of our lives. Gone are the days when we could have a conversation with the family at the dinner table and enjoy the moments thoroughly. Now, everyone seems to be zoned out, typing furiously on their cell phones even when there are people present in front of them.

All things considered, I cannot pretend that I am not a slave to my mobile phone or social media, which allows me to stay connected with others. But in my defense, I have been conditioned to follow what I have observed. Even with all my willpower, I cannot get rid of this curse that makes me overtly rely on these communication media.

Hopefully, as a community, we will learn to co-exist with the technological boom that the 21st century is going through.
