Essay on Modern Technology: Sample 1

Modern technology is a Gift of God. Discuss the Advantages and disadvantages.

Not long ago, we had to pull out a large folded map to get directions while traveling. Nowadays, we click on Google Maps or ask Siri o access the entire map on our devices. The modern generation is quite technical and can easily access any information. Now, we like everything to be 'quick'. The days of searching for a book in the library are gone. The world is at our fingertips with the help of smartphones, the internet, technology, and various smart devices. Throughout the day, we use technology to accomplish our daily tasks and assist in our routine activities.

However, it is disheartening that modern technology has changed the way societies were tied to each other. Bonds were emotional and genuine, cultural aspects prevailed, and humans were more physically active. These shiny pieces of tech do have some drawbacks. Let us take a look at some of the advantages and disadvantages of modern technology.

Modern technologies have helped us stay connected with people from all across the world. We have taken technology, like fish, to water, and it has become very difficult to survive without it.

How many lives have been saved so far with the help of modern medical technologies? Well, the numbers are innumerable. Modern equipments, technologies, and better healthcare facilities have helped humans defeat chronic and acute health crises.

Secondly, satellite communications continuously broadcast data around the globe to our computers and handheld devices. We get to watch our favorite shows, movies, news; know the weather conditions, forthcoming disasters, and even trade-in stock markets.

Thirdly, The education system has advanced significantly, allowing students to study remotely during the pandemic, thanks to modern technology. These innovations have not only raised living standards but also enhanced household chores and amenities, often appearing as a boon for human progress. However, they also bring their own challenges.

Ours is a technology-dominated society. Even the simplest of things are done with the help of machines or devices. Eventually, everything seems to be artificial. Below are some of the threats that individuals need to be careful of.

In today's world, even the simplest tasks that once required minimal effort now depend heavily on technology. We choose light-emitting devices over books for reading, opt to drive rather than walk short distances, and rely on online communication, which has impacted our social skills. We've reached a point where we have become handicapped, needing technology's assistance for tasks that require little effort.

What impact does it have on our minds? Will technologies like AI and ML replace manpower in the coming years? Maybe! Without realizing the extent of dependency and the cons associated with it, we are blindly adopting modern tech to make life easier. It makes everything virtual and impairs the power of real human interaction. We tend to find more value in communication through a device rather than face-to-face interaction.

Modern technologies, while simplifying tasks, have also fostered an increase in criminal activities. Modern technologies open more opportunities for crime. Smart devices and technological advancements are being used in negative ways too. Many illegal activities are carried out online through social media platforms, targeting the young generation.

Technological dependency has made the lifestyle sluggish and costly. Our standard of living is getting higher and higher with more expensive technologies coming into our day-to-day lives. Hence, we end up taking the massive burden to get more materialistic happiness.

Technology is changing the way we used to live. The famous saying 'technology is a useful servant but a dangerous master' needs to be implemented in our lives. Nowadays, it is apparent that we are not controlling our smart devices, but our devices are controlling us. Modern technologies have both advantages and disadvantages to offer to mankind, it depends upon how sensibly we embrace them.

IELTS Essay on Modern Technology: Sample 2

Modern technologies have boosted the Agricultural Sector. Give Your Opinion.

Agriculture & Food Production is one domain that has been in dire need of innovation and technological advancement.

Challenges such as climate change, farmer awareness gaps, natural hazards, resource depletion, floods, and complex supply chains have hampered agricultural productivity and profitability. Yet, modern technologies such as artificial intelligence, GIS software, big data, sensors, and cloud computing have led to a digital agricultural revolution. These advancements have significantly boosted yields and ensured self-sustainability, marking a game-changing transformation in the agricultural sector.

Modern technologies in precision agriculture have been developing new ways of managing farms, treatment of crops, and food systems. Digital presence has made agriculture profitable, safe, and effective. Modern farms get significant benefits from digital agriculture. Let us check some of the ways modern technologies have helped agriculture.

Firstly, GIS Software or Geographic Information System is a digital technology that helps the farmers stay alert about the changes that are taking place in the farms like plant health, crop yield, changes in moisture, and temperature. The GPS-integrated software applications enable pesticide optimization and fertilizer control so that the farmers can treat a specific affected area rather than treat the entire farm. This helps in the conservation of time, manpower, and capital.

Secondly, drones play a crucial role in capturing high-precision images of large farmlands. They provide detailed information on crop growth, soil conditions, and potential issues such as erosion and waterlogging. This technology empowers farmers to monitor their land thoroughly and make informed decisions promptly. It's transforming agriculture by offering quick, comprehensive insights that boost productivity, and mitigate risks effectively..

Thirdly, mobile applications have kept the entire agricultural supply chain transparent and in proper coordination. Through these mobile applications, retailers, farmers, sellers, and suppliers can communicate with one another and receive all the latest updates and insights. Mobile applications help in decision-making and awareness increase, which results in productivity, transparency, and profitability.

Fourthly, agriculture now integrates Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to enhance crop health, organize farmer data, manage pests and workloads, and streamline decision-making across the supply chain. AI and ML convert unstructured data into actionable insights, enabling better productivity decisions. AI also aids in weather forecasting, helping farmers optimize planting and harvesting times to reap maximum yield.

Simply put, modern technologies are not only automating the entire agricultural sector but also enabling precise cultivation with high productivity and sustainability. The concerns of labor, resource depletion, soil health, data, and opaque supply chain in agriculture are slowly being eradicated with modern technology.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to develop strong arguments in a technology essay?

Preparing a strong argument involves the formulation of a thesis statement to shape the larger idea or opinion concerning technology. After that, provide evidence for the thesis by including facts and statistics, as well as records, real-life experiences, and events that corroborate the assertions made earlier. Do not avoid recognizing other arguments that exist concerning the main point. Last, discuss why your arguments are stronger. You will do so by reflecting on possible weaknesses of any argument or perspective presented.

What vocabulary is useful for writing about modern technology?

Using vocabulary specific to modern technology shows your understanding of the field. Consider terms like "cloud computing", which refers to storing data and applications online rather than on local devices. "AI" or Artificial Intelligence describes machines with the ability to simulate human intelligence. "Cybersecurity" focuses on protecting computer systems from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction.  These are just a few examples, and incorporating terms relevant to your specific technology will make your essay even stronger.

How to conclude an IELTS essay on modern technology?

The conclusion to an IELTS essay must return the focus to your main proposition, which tells the reader what you stated. In conclusion, it is essential to parrot the key ideas briefly expounded in the body of the essay in order not to make the conclusion abrupt but to bring it smoothly from the rest of the essay. Finally, it remains optional to give the reader your last thought or your forecast as to the future direction of the technology that was considered. It is proof of a better comprehension of the subject and its relevance to society.

How to address both positive and negative aspects of technology?

A well-rounded essay doesn't just focus on the positive aspects of technology.  Acknowledge the benefits technology brings, such as increased efficiency and communication capabilities. However, it's equally important to address potential drawbacks like privacy concerns associated with data collection and security risks posed by cyber threats. Use transition words like "however," "on the other hand," or "conversely" to connect your discussion of both positive and negative aspects, creating a balanced and nuanced perspective on the role of technology in our lives.
