What is CHC? The full form of CHC is Community Health Center. The purpose of community health centres is to provide more people with access to essential preventative and primary care services. CHCs generally assist patients from lower-income communities who might not have access to transportation, be underfunded or uninsured, or experience language problems.  These organisations are  nonprofit, private, patient-governed, and community-directed. They serve populations who might otherwise face financial, geographic, linguistic, cultural, or other hurdles to treatment, therefore removing common barriers to care. Millions of individuals receive a wide range of reasonably priced healthcare services from CHCs at more than 1,400 organisations. CHCs assist clients irrespective of whether they are insured or not.

The Importance of CHC in Healthcare

  • HRSA data on health facility performance indicates that 62.89 percent of patients in 2018 belonged to an ethnic minority. Critical care services are provided by CHCs to underprivileged populations.
  • They provide thorough, high-quality primary and preventative care to all patients, regardless of their financial situation.
  • CHCs provide auxiliary services such as language translation, health education, and transportation.
  • They work as patient-driven boards of community-based organizations, which include non-profits, both public and private, as well as tribal and religious institutions.
  • One of their responsibilities is to create and supply systems that address the particular requirements of underprivileged and diverse communities.
  • CHCs fulfill compliance criteria as stated by the Health Resources and Services Administration’s (HRSA) Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC).
  • Community health centers are required to adhere to national quality standards and promote the Triple Aim, which aims to lower the per capita cost of healthcare while also increasing population health.
  • Health centers must provide performance statistics to HRSA once a year and actively participate in ongoing improvement of performance and quality initiatives in medical and operational domains.
