NIIT was founded in 1981 with a million rupees by IIT Delhi graduates Vijay K. Thadani and Rajendra S. Pawar. For the first time, NIIT established a franchise model for IT education by constructing nine centers by 1987.
Under the moniker Insoft, NIIT started its foray into the software business in 1986 with Software Product Delivery.
The business was reorganized in 2004 and split into NIIT Technologies and NIIT Limited.
