History of Knoxville University
The University of Tennessee Knoxville started as a small college in the Southwest Territory in 1794. In 1807, it was renamed East Tennessee College and was transformed into a university by 1840.
Between 1862 to 1865, the university operations were suspended during the Civil War. Then finally, in 1879, the university got its official name, and the UT system was created in 1968. In 1994, the university completed its 200 years from the establishment.
