Located in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Southeast Missouri State University, sometimes known as South-east or SEMO, is a public institution. The university offers complete degree programs at four regional campuses in addition to its main campus, and the Holland College of Arts and Media is housed on a secondary site. The Higher Learning Commission has granted the university accreditation.
South-east University provides more than 175 undergraduate degree programs and 75 graduate programs to its almost 12,000 enrolled students. The university was first established in 1873 as a normal school, and teacher education has always been one of its core strengths. The building of the River Campus created the state's only campus fully devoted to the visual and performing arts, contributing to the university's recent reputational and focus shift towards the arts. In the region of South-east Missouri, it is the sole four-year university.
The university is divided into five academic units: the College of Education, Health, and Human Studies; the College of Humanities and Social Sciences; the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics; and the Holland College of Arts and Media. The thirteen NCAA Division I athletic teams from the university are referred to as the South-east Missouri State Redhawks and play in the Ohio Valley Conference. The football team competes in Division I's Football Championship Subdivision.
