On May 22, 1895, Illinois Governor John P. Altgeld established Northern Illinois University as the state's first college-preparatory teacher training programme. Since then, the university has grown to provide a wide range of degrees in several fields. The university has 7 colleges that provide degrees, and the 765-acre main campus of the university is in Dekalb, featuring a diverse range of architectural styles as well as lovely outdoor areas. Additionally, the institution maintains community colleges in Naperville, Hoffman Estates, Rockford, and Chicago.
