Johnson and Wales University is a private and non-profit institution initially established as a business school in 1914. The university's main campus is established in Providence, Rhode Island. It was founded by Gertrude I. Johnson and Mary T. Wales, who used to be schoolmates at Pennsylvania State Normal School in Millersville, Pennsylvania.
In the early 20th century, the school offered bookkeeping, typing, shorthand, mathematics, and English courses. However, due to old age and illnesses, the founders had to sell the school to their Navy partners, Edward Triangelo and Morris Gaebe. In the hands of the new co-directors, the school was accredited nationally and even earned the status of a junior college in 1960.
The university grew rapidly after 1960. In 1963, it earned the status of a non-profit organization. By the end of 1983, the school had an annual enrollment of 3000 students. Eventually, in 1988, the school was officially announced as Johnson and Wales University, informally known as JWU.
Today, JWU has four campuses across the country; Providence, North Miami, Denver, and Charlotte. Johnson and Wales University is home to about six departments on each of its four campuses. They are the John Hazen White College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, the College of Engineering and Design, the College of Health and Wellness, and the College of Culinary Arts.
