University of Hull: Rankings, Courses & Admissions

The University of Hull is a public institution in Hull in the United Kingdom. The University of Hull functions on its motto- Lampada Ferens, i.e. carrying the light of learning. The institution ranks at 601-800th in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings list for 2022. The University was founded in 1927 as the University College Hull. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of York in 1928, while the college opened with 39 students and 14 departments. It is the 14th oldest university in England. 

The Hull Business School has accreditation from the AMBA (Association of MBAs) for its programmes. Other accreditations the institute has include CIMA, ICAEW, CIPFA, ACCA, CILT, CIPD, and more. The University has 16,000+ students along with 2,500 employees and 1,000+ academic staff members. 

The University has its campus at Cottingham Road in Hull. The University has research expertise in areas like maritime history, social justice, and environmental technologies. Some of its research institutions include the Wilberforce Institute, Blaydes Maritime Centre, Richard Hoggart Centre for Comparative Cultural Studies, and more. 

There are four faculties at the institution, along with 17 departments and schools. There is the Faculty of Arts, Cultures and Education which comprises of schools for various subjects including education, arts, and humanities. The Faculty of Business, Law and Politics has schools for business, law, and politics and international studies. The Faculty of Health Sciences has schools for nursing and midwifery, medicine and more. The Faculty of Science and Engineering has schools for engineering, computer science, natural sciences, and other disciplines. 

Famous alumni at the institution include the first openly-gay individual to hold office in Serbia, Ana Brnabic, its Prime Minister, journalist-novelist Matt Haig, actor Malcolm Sinclair, Sky CEO and present Executive Chairman, David Jeremy Darroch, and novelist Jonathan Raban. 

There are widespread connections with the industry, where companies are helped in recruiting interns or part-funding them via the Humber Internships. They can also advertise part-time or permanent jobs on campus along with conducting campus interviews for graduates. There are student mentoring programmes as well. There are internship options for students (full-time or part-time) which are available for 8-12 weeks throughout vacations. There are full-year industrial placements, with a year in industry across fields like computer science, engineering, legislative studies and politics, chemistry, and games and digital design. Placements usually cover 9-12 months. Students can also participate in shorter programmes for placements.
