Specializing in art and design, the University for the Creative Arts is located in the south of England. The Kent Institute of Art and Design and the Surrey Institute of Art & Design, which already had degree-awarding status, merged to form the University College for the Creative Arts in Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone, and Rochester in 2005. Both constituent schools were established by combining the local art schools in Kent and Surrey, respectively. In 2008, it was given university status, and the current name was adopted.
In addition to its educational base at The Maidstone Studios and its project and exhibition space in Folkestone Creative Quarter, UCA maintains campuses in Canterbury, Epsom, and Farnham. It formerly had two campuses: one in Rochester (closed in 2023) and one in Maidstone (closed in 2014).
In addition to four impact case studies, UCA presented 115 research outputs for the expert panel on art and design in REF 2021. In terms of originality, significance, and rigor, 78% of UCA's research was rated as world-leading and internationally good by REF 2021.
