A university in Birmingham, England is known by the abbreviation BCU. It was first founded in 1843 as the Birmingham College of Art, was given a polytechnic designation in 1971, and was given university status in 1992.
The university has two main campuses that serve four colleges. It also provides courses in business, the performing arts, social sciences, technology, engineering, education, and the built environment. The institution has occupied a variety of Birmingham locations over the course of its existence. By 2022, the university will have campuses on Victoria Street, Margaret Street, Bourneville, City Centre Campus, and City South Campus.
Near the City Centre Campus, University House—previously known as the New Technology Institute or NTI—is where some of the university's professional service departments are housed. At the Bourneville Centre for Visual Arts, there is a gallery known as International Project Space (IPS).
Near City North Campus, Moor Lane serves as a place for conferences, corporate training, and athletic events. Previously, a specialized sports center with tennis courts, bowling alleys, football and rugby fields, a running track, and a social club was situated behind The Coppice, a student housing complex near to the former City North Campus.
