Åbo Akademi University is a public university located primarily in Turku, Finland, with a smaller campus in Vaasa. Established in 1918, it holds the distinction of being the only exclusively Swedish-language multi-faculty university in Finland.
Founded as a private institution due to concerns about the future of the Swedish language in Finnish academia, it transitioned to a public university in 1981.
Starting with just 47 students, the university now has around 5900 students. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral studies for international and Nordic students, mainly in Swedish. It also offers some English-taught programs, particularly at master's level.
