History of Lamar University
A few yards from where South Park Junior College is now located, Lamar University was established in 1923 and welcomed 125 students for its inaugural fall semester. In 1932, the institution's name was changed to Lamar College in recognition of Mirabeau B. Lamar, the Republic of Texas's second president and the state's "Father of Education." Lamar moved to its current site in the early 1940s, breaking away from the South Park school district that had founded the institution. The establishment of Lamar's first PhD program in 1970 contributed to the institution's growing reputation as a research hub. The name was changed to Lamar University in 1971.
