About the University of Florida

The University of Florida (UF) is a large, land-grant, comprehensive, public research university. Florida is one of the most academically varied public universities in the country and the oldest, biggest, and most comprehensive university in the state. Florida has a long history of establishing programs in service, research, and foreign education. It is one of the Association of American Universities' seventeen public land-grant institutions. 

In 1853, Ocala's Kingsbury Academy was taken over by the state-funded East Florida Seminary. In the 1860s, the seminary relocated to Gainesville. Later, it merged with Florida Agricultural College, the state's land-grant institution, which was then located in Lake City. The college was relocated to Gainesville and became a university in 1905 as a result of legislative action.

Over the course of three commencement ceremonies this summer, which will take place in the Exactech Arena at the Stephen C. On Tuesday, August 6, the University of Florida will resume regular business as usual. All student-related and academic activities, including online courses, will resume with the return of classes. History of the University of Florida

The history of the University of Florida dates back to the early days of state-funded higher education. Gilbert Kingsbury founded the East Florida Seminary in 1853, not long after Governor Thomas Brown signed a measure providing funding. 

In 1905, this finally combined to become the new University of the State of Florida, together with the previous Florida Agricultural College, the St. Petersburg Normal and Industrial School, and the South Florida Military College. The university's Buckman Hall honours Henry Holland Buckman, the man who originated the pertinent law, which was known as the Buckman Act.   

The founding of the Colleges of Medicine and Nursing in 1956 and a teaching hospital two years later are two of the 20th century's most significant achievements. By expanding on them, UF has become the only college in the nation to house six distinct healthcare colleges on one campus. In 1968, a new milestone was accomplished when the first-ever "Gator" competed in the Olympics. In 2014, the total number of students who had graduated from UF reached half a million.
