Charles Sturt University is named after Charles Napier Sturt. He was among the most significant explorers in the annals of early Australian history. In 1827, Sturt travelled to New South Wales and started to explore the area. 

The Bathurst Experiment Farm was founded in 1895, which is when Charles Sturt University actually originated. Charles Sturt University was formally founded on July 19, 1989, following a series of progressive mergers of regional institutions in western and south-western New South Wales.
