The University of Twente (UT), is one of the best technical universities in the Netherlands. With around 16,500 members including faculty and students , the institute is a cultural melting pot, representing people from around 85 nationalities.   

Founded in 1961 as the Twente Technological University of Applied Sciences, it distinguished itself by integrating technology and the social sciences. The university officially opened in 1964 and, in the summer of 1986, was renamed the University of Twente Netherlands. 

The University of Twente is located in Drienerlolaan 5, 7522 NB Enschede, The Netherlands. It is renowned internationally and secured the 184th spot in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2024 and 210th position in the QS World University Rankings 2024. Additionally, the university achieved the first position in THE Impact Rankings: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure 2023. 

The Shanghai Academic Rankings 2023 placed the university within the top 500 institutes worldwide. Owing to its exceptional scientific research, UT achieved the 489th position in the CWTS Leiden Rankings 2023.

Infrastructure of University of Twente

Here is a look at the exciting research labs available to you on campus:

  • Wearable Robotics Lab: This lab is a space for developing, testing, and evaluating wearables robots in a secure environment. It is also the base for teams participating in the international Cybathlon competitions.

  • TERRINet: The European Robotics Research Infrastructure Network enables researchers and SMEs across nations to access robotic research infrastructure in Europe. This includes logistical, scientific, and technological support to external researchers who use the facility.
  • Twente47: It is an Internet-of-Things (IoT) Accelerator. The facilities include living labs and coaching grids from dedicated business developers. 

Academics at University of Twente

The university accepts applications to its bachelor's programs starting from the 1st of October to 1st of May for every academic session. However, for certain programs  such as Bachelor's in Psychology and Bachelor's in Technical Medicine, the application deadline is usually 15th January. 

Master's programs at the university invite applications twice a year for two different intakes. Applications for the September intake start on 1st October of the previous year, and those for the February intake begin on 1st March of the previous year. The deadlines for the September intake is 1st May whereas for the February intake is 1st October. 

 

Admission Process of University of Twente

To enroll in any program, you can follow the University of Twente admission process:

  • Studielink: You will need to apply for your chosen program through the Studielink. Here, you will need to choose your start date as well. 
  • Email Confirmation: Once you successfully submit your Studielink application, you will receive an email confirmation with your login credentials for the OSIRIS account which is the university's student information system. 
  • OSIRIS: Continue your application by logging into your OSIRIS account. After login, click on 'Details' behind your application to continue with the submission of documents and the rest of the process. 
  • Wait for Acceptance: The university will get back to you about your application status. If your application requires additional information, someone from the university will contact you. You can check the status of your application under ‘Progress’ on your OSIRIS account.
  • Acceptance: When you receive your admission letter, you must accept the offer to reserve your spot in the program. Make sure to do this at the earliest to get started with the enrollment process.

Admission Requirements for University of Twente

The University of Twente admission requirements are two-fold. You must meet both the language and the equivalent diploma requirements before the application deadline to be admissible. 

Here are the language certifications you need to have when applying for a bachelor’s or master's degree at UT:

  • Dutch Language Requirements: If you are applying to a Dutch-taught program, you can showcase your Dutch proficiency through certificates like the Staatsexamen Nederlands als Tweede Taal (NT2) and program II (Common European Framework Reference B2-C1). Alternatively, you can get the Certificaat Nederlands als Vreemde Taal (CNaVT) with either Educatief Startbekwaam (ERK B2) or Educatief Professioneel (ERK C1). Your last certification option is taking Dutch as part of a secondary school examination equivalent to the Dutch VWO exam. 
  • English Language Requirements: During the application procedure, you will be asked to attach proof of your English proficiency. You can apply to a course of your choice if you meet the cut-off requirements of any certifications enlisted in the following table:

IELTS Overall score of 6.0. The certificate must not be more than 2 years old.
TOEFL iBT Overall score of 80. The certificate must not be more than 2 years old.
Cambridge C1 Advanced (CAE) Overall score of 169
Cambridge C2 Proficiency (CPE) A, B, or C grade.

Apart from language requirements, you must fulfill the academic requirements too. These qualifications vary across countries and depend upon the exam you take. Here are the requirements for Indian students applying to UT:

  • All Indian Senior School Certificate with A1, A2, or B1 grades in the required 5 main academic subjects. 
  • Indian School Certificate with an average of 75% overall and 75% in each required 5 academic subjects. 
  • Either of the certificates need to have Mathematics as one of the subjects. Depending upon the course you are applying to, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology might also be mandatory. 

If you are applying for an MSc degree at the university, you must have secured a minimum of 75% in one of the following courses:

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Honors)
  • Bachelor of Engineering
  • Bachelor of Technology
  • Bachelor of Laws
  • Bachelor of Education
  • Bachelor of Arts (Honors) with at least first class/division obtained at an institution with the highest NAAC accreditation level with the Institute of National Importance status.
  • Bachelor of Science (Honors) with at least first class/division obtained at an institution with the highest NAAC accreditation level with the Institute of National Importance status.

The University of Twente has an acceptance rate of 51%.
