History
The University of Massachusetts Amherst began as the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1863. It was established under the national Morrill and Grant Colleges Act. The first class was offered in 1867, with four faculty members, and 56 students, and was set on 310 acres of rural land.
Computer Science began at the university in 1961 as a subsection of the Chemistry Department of UMass Amherst. But it was only in 2015 when the Department of Computer Science became the College of Information and Computer Sciences.
