With only a 4.5% unemployment rate (in March 2023), Austria can be considered a land of opportunities. There are several job opportunities in Austria for skilled and qualified professionals. Per official reports by the European Commission, of the 3,913,652 employed population, 926,992 were foreign workers. It is an excellent example of available job opportunities in Austria for domestic and international aspirants.

The work climate is usually around 8-hour days or 40-hour working weeks in most cases. Add to that the 13th and 14th salaries (for holiday/vacation bonuses and Christmas bonuses), and you have a global career that promises amazing rewards and a high quality of life. On that note, here is a guide to the available jobs in Austria for Indians and other international aspirants.

How to Find a Job in Austria

If you had previously chosen to study abroad in Austria and are seeking employment in the country, below are some ways in which you can proceed:

Official Government Portals

  • The official government website- www.migration.gv.at, is the best resource for finding the full list of skills shortages and high-demand occupations in the country. For instance, in 2022, high-demand jobs included cost accountants, physicians, data processing engineers, ophthalmic opticians, nurses, etc.
  • You can use other official portals like EURES (European Commission) and others to find available jobs.

Private Job-Recruiting Portals

  • You can find internships and placements at job-recruiting platforms like naukri.com, LinkedIn, monster.com, etc.
  • Austria offers ample opportunities for teachers, with opportunities across private language academies, public schools, and universities. The British Council extends several language teaching positions in the country as well.

Summer Jobs & Volunteering Work

  • You can start with summer jobs while completing your course, working at clubs, bars, cafes, restaurants, resorts, grape farms, and more.
  • You can also take up volunteering opportunities through WWOOF Austria or Concordia, among other platforms.
  • The Institute of Science and Technology (IST) also offers a summer program and opportunities throughout the year.

Essential Things to Keep in Mind While Finding a Job in Austria

  • You will require a visa to work in the country. You must contact your consulate/embassy to learn more about the visa type applicable to you. The Jobseeker Visa, for instance, allows qualified non-EU aspirants to find work for six months. After getting employment, you should apply for a suitable work permit.
  • While applying, submit your CV/resume with an attached photograph and certificates of your qualifications. You should mention contact information, volunteering information, personal attributes, and work experience.
  • Keep your CV to two pages and put in a cover letter. Write in German (Austria’s official language) and English.
  • You must furnish proof of German language fluency or take the ÖSD (the official German language proficiency exam) for this purpose.
  • Make sure that you adequately explain your qualifications and skill sets to companies in Austria.
